San Francisco Independent Film Showtimes

Find a movie to watch at an indie cinema in San Francisco. Daily showtimes from Roxie, Balboa, 4 Star, Vogue & Marina theaters.

Common Questions

Where can I watch indie films in San Francisco?

SF has a handful of great indie theaters. The Roxie in the Mission is the big oneβ€”been around since 1909 and has the best documentary programming in the city. Out in the Richmond you've got the 4 Star and Balboa, both gorgeous old Art Deco spots. The Vogue in Presidio Heights is cozy and shows a solid mix. And in the Marina there's the Marina and Presidio theaters.

Why go to an indie theater instead of a chain?

Honestly? Better movies. These places show stuff you won't find at the Metreonβ€”foreign films, documentaries, weird old classics, limited releases. Plus they're all single-screen theaters with actual character. Some have been here for over 100 years. You'll sometimes catch filmmaker Q&As or special events too. It's just a different vibe than sitting in a Dolby theater watching the 15th Marvel thing.

Which indie theater is the best?

Depends what you're into. The Roxie is the most well-known and has the most interesting programmingβ€”if there's a buzzy doc or a niche foreign film, it's probably playing there. The Balboa and 4 Star are worth the trek to the Richmond if you like beautiful old theaters. The Balboa especially has this great vintage feel.

How current are these showtimes?

We pull from each theater's ticketing system a few times a day. The links go straight to their sites so you can buy tickets right there. Usually shows about a week out.

By Neighborhood

Mission

The Roxie is the heart of SF indie cinema. It's been on 16th Street since 1909 and tends to get the most interesting stuffβ€”docs, foreign films, whatever's buzzing at festivals.

Richmond

Worth the trip for the theaters alone. The Balboa (1926) and 4 Star are both gorgeous old single-screens with that classic movie palace feel. Good dim sum nearby too.

Presidio Heights

The Vogue on Sacramento is small and low-key. Been there since 1910. Nice if you're in that part of town and want something that isn't a 20-screen multiplex.

Marina

Two theaters on Chestnut Street: the Presidio (newer, nice screens) and the Marina (more of a neighborhood spot). Both do a mix of indie and some wider releases.
